An economic impact quantifying the costs and benefits of Communities In Schools model.

Communities In Schools contracted with EMSI to specify its economic and social returns to society through a rigorous third-party investment analysis. The purpose of this important next step is to quantify the return on investment of Communities In Schools’ 113 high school-serving affiliates in its network to taxpayers, businesses, and students. The analysis also shows the economic benefits when local affiliates go from implementing parts of the Communities In Schools model in some of their high schools to full implementation in all of their high schools.

On October 11, 2011, long-term board member and program chair Joan Benner Fuller was tragically killed in a car accident in California. Joan had an enormous passion for, and commitment to, the students of Communities In Schools Lehigh Valley. CIS was one of a small number of organizations designated by Joan’s family to receive memorial gifts.

To honor Joan and create a legacy that will continue her commitment to the students, the Communities In Schools staff and board have created the Joan Benner Fuller Scholarship Fund. We hope that by doing so, her impact on the long-term success of our students can continue and become a permanent part of the organization she cared so deeply about.

We ask that you help us to create this fund by making a contribution to Communities In Schools Lehigh Valley in memory of Joan. Follow the link on the right side that says “Donate Now”. Under “Designate my Donation” please denote “Joan B. Fuller Scholarship”. Checks may also be sent directly to Communities In Schools at P.O. Box 722, Allentown PA 18105. If sending a check please note that your contribution is for the”Joan B. Fuller Scholarship”. Thank you for your help and support.

Please click here for more information on Joan and the scholarship in her memory.

On Thursday, February 23rd, 2012, South Mountain Middle School, a COMPASS Community School, hosted its Fifth Annual Family Fun Night. Through collaboration with the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, Allentown School District, and Communities In Schools of the Lehigh Valley, Inc., South Mountain Middle School has been transformed into a vibrant and welcoming community school where parents, students, and the residents of South Allentown work together to maximize achievement and celebrate success.

Over 500 people attended and participated in this year’s free Family Fun Night event. There was free food and prizes, carnival games, face painting, indoor soccer, science games, dance performances by HALA, Zumba demonstrations, free books from Cops N Kids and Parkland HS, and many other family friendly activities.

Since its inception as a Community School, South Mountain has hosted hundreds of programs during and after school to serve its students, parents, and community members. These programs run in partnership with numerous local community organizations such as the Allentown Youth Soccer Club, the Literacy Center of the Lehigh Valley, Community Bike Works, Youth Education in the Arts, Muhlenberg College, DeSales University, Lehigh Valley Zoo, Girl Scouts, Girls on the Run, St. Lukes Hospital, and the DaVinci Science Center.

This year’s Family Fun Night was an opportunity to celebrate the success of South Mountain Middle School as a Community School, as well as an opportunity to inform families and the South Mountain community about the variety of programs and services available to them. In addition to the agencies and programs listed above, many additional agencies were on hand to offer activities and information about their services and including: Head Start of the Lehigh Valley, Allentown YM/ YWCA, KidsPeace, Allentown Health Bureau, Allentown Police Department, HALA, Pinebrook Services, Valley Youth House, Turning Point, local SES providers, Wells Fargo, PA Career Link, and many more.

The event was a great success, and Principal Frank Derrick and Community School Director Wendy L. Seiffert are grateful to everyone who helped make the night a success.

The Department of Education recently awarded $64.4 million to 57 schools and organizations as part of the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant. The purpose of the funding is to promote academic achievement and to assist at-risk students in high-poverty schools. The Allentown School District was awarded funding for this project. CIS, along with several other community and faith based organizations have partnered with the school district to provide educational services to students in several high-poverty and low-performing schools throughout the school district. CIS will be providing services and programs at South Mountain Middle School. The goals of the grant project are: 1) Students who participate in the after school and summer programs will meet or exceed state and local academic achievement standards in reading and math, 2) Students will improve their school attendance and behavior in school, and 3) Students will demonstrate additional positive educational, social, and behavioral changes. The CIS 21st Century Community Learning Center will serve 50 students in addition to providing educational opportunities to parents, such as ESL and GED courses. The program will also provide students with a variety of enrichment opportunities that they might not receive during regular school hours.
