Volunteer of the Month

The HOPE Project honors Megan Steffen as the Volunteer of the Month! Megan has been volunteering as a mentor for The HOPE Project at William Allen High School for the entire school year. She is dedicated, responsible, and reliable as she serves as a positive role model for the high school students. Megan is also willing and eager to help with homework and is flexible to support the students in any other way that she can. Megan is always thinking of the students’ best interest. We are lucky to have Megan on our mentor team! Way to go, Megan and thank you!!

CIS to Support Cops & Community Program at Easton Area Academy

For the second year in a row CIS was awarded funding through the Two Rivers Health and Wellness Foundation to support the Cops and Community program at the Easton Area Academy. The goal of the program is to create positive relationships between students and law enforcement. Through workshops, the program also seeks to address diversity issues, develop problem solving, provide character development opportunities and provide leadership training to students. The program will be delivered by the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI).

21st Century Community Learning Center Program to begin at South Mountain Middle School

The Department of Education recently awarded $64.4 million to 57 schools and organizations as part of the 21^st Century Community Learning Center Grant. The purpose of the funding is to promote academic achievement and to assist at-risk students in high-poverty schools. The Allentown School District was awarded funding for this project. CIS, along with several other community and faith based organizations have partnered with the school district to provide educational services to students in several high-poverty and low-performing schools throughout the school district. CIS will be providing services and programs at South Mountain Middle School. The goals of the grant project are: 1) Students who participate in the after school and summer programs will meet or exceed state and local academic achievement standards in reading and math, 2) Students will improve their school attendance and behavior in school, and 3) Students will demonstrate additional positive educational, social, and behavioral changes. The CIS 21^st Century Community Learning Center will serve 50 students in addition to providing educational opportunities to parents, such as ESL and GED courses. The program will also provide students with a variety of enrichment opportunities that they might not receive during regular school hours.

The Historic Downtown Shopping District and Southside Shopping and Arts District businesses invite you to Shop for a Cause Weekend.

Bring your “Shoppers Form” with you to the participating businesses between Friday, February 17 and Sunday February 19, and have the business owner fill out your form to give 10% of your purchase to Communities In Schools of the Lehigh Valley!

FREE English Classes

The Literacy Center of the Lehigh Valley will begin to offer free English classes at Calypso Elementary School from 6:00 – 8:30pm on Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning January 17, 2012. To enroll in classes you must attend a registration session at Calypso on January 10th or 12th at 6:00pm. Calypso Elementary School is located at 1021 Calypso Ave. in Bethlehem. During National Mentoring Month, we celebrate the contributions of all those who cultivate a supportive environment for the next generation, and we recommit to expanding mentorship opportunities across our country.”
